*** BOOK BLITZ – How I Became A Teenage Survivalist by Julie L Casey ***

Synopsis:

Bracken is a typical teenage boy, more interested in the angles of the girl’s exposed back teasing him from the seat ahead of him than in anything the geometry teacher could present. His life is filled with school, video games, and thoughts of girls, not necessarily in that order. Life just flows along uneventfully and unacknowledged, like the electricity that courses through the power lines — until PF (Power Failure) Day. On PF Day, the sun strikes Bracken’s world with an unseen surge of electromagnetic fury, which cripples power stations and burns transformers to crispy nuggets of regret.

No one in Bracken’s world had ever thought about how much they depended on electrical power, but now, without it, they are plunged into survival mode. Bracken soon realizes how lucky he is to live on a farm in the Midwest. What seemed like a dull and backwards life before is now the greatest chance for survival in what seems like a powerless world. Food, water, and heat are readily available, although hard work is required to make use of them. Bracken and his family must learn to survive like their ancestors, who settled their land.

Emerging from Darkness by Kira Adams (#book 2)

I have received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts are 100% mine and I was not compensated in any way.

I have to say that I feel really lucky that I was able to do firstly beta reading and then I received an ARC of this amazing book! I love, adore and I am simply obsessed with this series! But before I will start my review…

Small Blurb:

The virus is spreading, the future is uncertain, and the Degenerates are taking control.

Ike Glass and Ace Cullen have found themselves in quite the predicament: the Degenerates have located their hideout and kidnapped Phoenix and Rian, and now they must fight for their lives. Phoenix Blue knows she must tread carefully if she expects to keep her sister alive. What she doesn’t expect is the strength her young sister possesses, and the lengths her newfound family will go to in order to save their lives. Sometimes the ties that bind us have nothing to do with blood relations. Just how far will these four friends go in their quest to emerge from the darkness?

My thoughts:

The book picks up straight after first book has finished. Phoenix and Rian have been kidnapped by degenerates. Ike, Cullen and Foster are kneeling in front of the remaining degenerates expecting being shot or wounded and left for Zombies to get them. The first option is better for them. But even though their situation seems to be hopeless, Cullen is not giving up. And soon they are free and have a hostage. Because Cullen is wounded, they have to wait few days before they will start their rescue mission.

In the meantime, Phoenix is treated like a walking blood bag and is connected to IV to take all her blood and start producing the cure. She still hopes that her friends, Ike and Ace will survive and help her, but it’s her sister, Rian that is freeing them. They go back to their previous location, but unfortunately neither Cullen or Ike are there. Sisters decide to look refuge in one of the prisons. What they don’t know, Ike and Cullen decided to do the same. Unfortunately, they haven’t picked the same one. One of the prison is like a heaven, but other is full of degenerates.

In this book we have as in previous part, fighting for survival, violence, friendship, love and drama. death of some characters just broke me and I was sobbing. What I love the most about this part? It’s more Ike’s and Cullen stories, so we are able to get to know them a bit better. Also I love how Phoenix opens up to Cullen, and also his feelings. Simply amazing.

Can’t wait for next part. Well deserved 5 stars!

And what is more now, the first part is FREE! So go and grab your copy!

Excerpts

Excerpt One

I don’t know what makes me do it. In fact, I don’t know why I am the way I am with Owen. I’ve been careful and timid and obedient my entire life, my only mission to please everyone—please my father, Chen, my mother, my friends, my teachers. Please, please, please, please, please. That’s all I do. And all it’s done for me is land me in Woodstock, away from my friends and the senior year I was expecting to have. I’m not pleasing Owen Harper, too. So I stand with my tray and raise my arm slowly by my side, my eyes zeroed in on his until I’m pointing at him. I close one eye and cock my head slightly to the right, like I’m making sure I have him in my sights—and then I pull the trigger.

“Jesus H Christ, Kensi! What’s wrong with you?” Willow asks. She pulls my arm back down, but I keep my eyes on Owen, staring into his gray-blue eyes—eyes that look like a wolf’s. “What are you doing?”

“I’m starting a war, Willow,” I say, my heart speeding up and my breath growing more ragged as reality catches up with me.

I’m starting a war with a guy who doesn’t lose; a guy who doesn’t play by the rules.

A guy who scares me, and who knows where I sleep at night.

Excerpt TwoI dodge backpacks and elbows through the busy hallway until I see the glass door of the principal’s office swing open, Owen stepping through, his own pink slip crumpled in his hand, his eyes still dark, angry.

“Are you okay?” I ask, walking up to him, my steps coming quicker. He grabs my hand fast, his grip on my fingers tight, almost painful, and pulls me behind him through the thick crowd in the hall until we reach the back door, near the loading zone for the cafeteria. He pushes down hard, forcing the door open, then pulls my arm, leading me around a corner to a line of recycling bins.

“I’m so sorry…” I start, but Owen’s hands find me fast, his fingers wrapping around my shoulders, his force moving me back until I’m flush with the wall, and then his lips crash down on me.

His hands slide from my shoulders to my neck and into my hair, his mouth covering mine as if he needs my air to breathe, and he closes the small distance between us, the warmth and hardness of him pressing into my body, my hands operating on their own instinct, finding his sides and back until I’m clinging to him, grabbing bunches of his black sweatshirt all at once.

Owen’s hand moves to his head while he’s kissing me, and he tosses his hat to the ground to the side of us, and I let my fingers move to his hair, weaving the strands in and out, letting the softness of them curl around me.

This is the best kiss of my life. Every kiss with Owen has been the best kiss of my life. But this one—it’s full of something more. His lips work mine for long seconds, his tongue passing over mine slowly, his teeth dragging over my bottom lip, my top lip, tugging on me and pulling me into him even deeper. I can feel his heartbeat through his shirt, and I let my hands roam over his chest and around his back again, the feel of him exactly as it is every time I dream.

Excerpt Three

“You’re a virgin, right?” Owen says, his question surprising me, igniting a fire over my face and making me feel sick and fearful and wonderful all at once. His smile is soft, and he’s not making fun of me, but I’m somehow ashamed that I don’t know what to do, that I’m inexperienced.

“I am. I’m sorry,” I say, and he lowers his head with a small laugh. When he lifts to look at me again, he lowers himself, resting the weight of his body on top of mine, the heat of his skin covering me, warming me completely, and all my breasts want is the feeling of his skin against them, no more barriers in between.

“Kens, don’t apologize. It makes you beautiful. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t make any assumptions, to make sure I treat you…right,” he says, his lips kissing me softly, and then gliding down my chin and neck as he raises himself over me again. He pauses when his mouth is right between my breasts, resting his chin on the center clasp of my bra, and he looks up at me, waiting for me to tell him it’s okay to move forward.

I nod slightly, biting my lip and closing my eyes, arching my back, wanting to press into him harder. Owen’s teeth grip the clasp in the center of my bra, and I don’t know if he’s torn it open or managed to unhook it, but I feel the lacey material begin to slide open, releasing the tension over my breasts, but keeping my nipples covered. The sensation of his tongue on the curve of my breast drives the arch in my back deeper, causing the material of my bra to completely fall to the sides. The cool rush of air on my nipples leaves them feeling hungrier somehow, and I look down, my eyes meeting Owen’s, his sexy smile paused right above one of the peaks. I watch as he leans down, his eyes on mine the entire time, his tongue reaching out and taking a taste of my body, the hardness of my nipple responding with shivers across my skin.

Oh. My. God.

 Wild Reckless, in Five Words

Hard – This story is very much about making hard choices. Each character, even those who are on the side, is faced with life-altering decisions—be it how to react in the face of a nightmare or how to balance responsibility with the freedom that is supposed to come with being young.

Real – I have this word taped on a Post It to my computer. I have had it there since I sat down with my very first novel. It is something I aim for with every piece I write. I want to create stories that are real, and sometimes that means going places that are ugly, having people do things that are ugly, hurtful and just plain messed up. But that’s real, and I think seeing characters overcome in spite of it—in the face of all that real shit that life throws at you—that can be inspiring.

Dark—This story is my darkest yet, and that very well may be because of one of the other words—real. There are times where Owen and Kensi are both tested with some severe tragedies, but I don’t think the book shows anything that doesn’t play out in real life in towns, in homes and in young hearts around America. I wanted this story to shed light on some very heavy subjects: mental health and a pretty sub-standard system for dealing with it, suicide and addiction. It’s hard to do that honestly and not paint a bleak picture. But there are stars in this dark sky. I made sure of that.

Trust—I was tempted to say love here, but this book is more than love; it’s about trust and the complete loss of this essential belief. Without trust, love dies—it can’t fly. And these characters are on the brink of losing trust in everything until they find each other.

Hopeful—In the end, this story offers hope that even when things are at the very worst, there is light in darkness. There is hope if we choose to see it, and there is love if we decide to take the chance.

Fun Facts about Wild Reckless

  1. I set this book in Woodstock, Illinois for two enormous reasons. One, my husband is from that neck of the woods, and the way he talks about this town is exactly the feeling this book needed. I’ve been there, soaked it in, loved it and could feel Woodstock in my bones when I wrote. As much as I want the characters to come alive in this story, I hope the town does too. I hope it lives and breathes and evokes every sense in the reader. And the second reason is John Hughes. He filmed here a lot—here and around the area—and that man’s movies pretty much set the foundation for my adolescence.
  2. Phantom Ant is mentioned once in the book. This is a little inside joke between my husband and I that started with one of those itches you get on your leg or foot, the ones that feel like an ant but are nothing. We call them phantom ants, and the first time we said that, we thought it would be a hell of a band name. In Reckless, the dream is realized.
  3. The tone of this book, more than any other, was influenced by the music I was listening to at the time. There’s a Spotify playlist for it, and I encourage readers to give it a listen while they read: https://play.spotify.com/user/thegingerscott/playlist/5GRMsCTjJ9fk5Zm5GZWPc4
If you don’t do Spotify, just embrace the band War on Drugs and you’ll get a really good sense of the mood.
  4. Sometimes I write all day, and sometimes it’s mostly in the afternoons. This book—it happened at night, often late at night. It needed that.
  5. Kensi plays the xylophone in this story, and so did I in high school. When it comes to band geek lore, I know what I’m talking about 😉
  6. I love NCAA hoops, as does the hubby. There was a lot of debate over colleges that would fit the Owen Harper style of play in our house.
  7. In my journalism days, I covered the police beat for a while. I was privy to a lot of drug and gang research and some up-way-too-close-and-personal autopsy experiences. I got to put a lot of that to work in Reckless.

Excerpt

I run my fingertips over the blue-and-silver paintwork as I walk toward the back end. Bending over, I start poking around, taking a look at the engine.

“Please tell me that you’re my birthday present.”

The Irish drawl has the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end.

I turn my head to find Carrick Ryan standing behind me.

Oh. Wow.

He’s definitely better looking in the flesh than on television. I knew he was attractive. But blonds aren’t usually my thing. I’m more of a dark-hair-and-dark-eyes kind of girl.

But his dirty-blond hair, blue eyes laced with sin, and full lips—the kind of lips you spend hours sucking on—and that chiseled jaw decorated with stubble…yep, it all seems to be working for me. Well, my body anyway. Definitely not my head. Man-sluts are not my thing.

My eyes meet with his as he lifts them from blatantly staring at my arse. The look in them hits me straight in the gut, surprising the hell out of me. His eyes are profoundly blue and filled with heat. My skin starts to prickle as his intense stare burns me up.

I’ve never had such an instant visual reaction to a man before.

Fuck.

Take it easy, Andi. This isn’t a problem. You’ve met good-looking men before. You can turn this off. Drivers are a no-go area, especially ones you work for.

My job is too important to lose over a man.

Straightening, I turn to face him.

“Hello,” I say in my most confident and formal voice.

I get nothing back, and that’s because he hasn’t heard me. He’s too busy staring at my breasts.

Typical man.

I have the sudden urge to punch him in his handsome face.

But I won’t because I’m a professional. I’ll handle this in the best way I know when it comes to dealing with pervy dickheads like him.

“It’s your birthday?” I say sweetly, my smile a little on the flirtatious side.

He grins. “It sure is, and it’s definitely looking up now that you’re here. Are you going to make it extra special for me, sugar?”

He thinks he’s about to get lucky.

Far from it. Smarmy twat.

I tilt my head to the side, keeping the flirty smile on my face, as I walk up to him until there’s very little space between us. I press my fingers to his chest. God, that’s firm. I can feel the ridge of his muscles underneath my fingertips.

He’s tall, too, a good few inches higher than my five-nine. I’d say he’s six-one, which is tall for a driver, but he’s lean. He needs to be to fit into those cars. I bet, under those clothes of his, there’s nothing but toned muscle. Drivers have to be seriously fit, and Carrick Ryan certainly ticks that box on both counts.

Now, I’m imagining him naked. Great. Just fucking great.

I force my focus back to the now. “Well…” I lean in closer to him, hearing him suck in a sharp breath. I lower my voice as I whisper, “If you ever call me sugar again, you won’t see your next birthday. That’s for sure.”

He tilts his head back in amusement. “Feisty. I like it.”

I take a step back, dropping my hand from his chest. “There’s nothing here for you to like.”

His eyes run the length of me, lingering on my legs, the lusty look firing in them again. “I see plenty to like. Jesus…your legs go on forever.”

I wish I had something to hide my legs behind. Instead, I fold my arms to bring his focus up. “I’m not your type.”

Lifting his eyes back to mine, he gives me a confident smile. “Amazing arse. Great stems. Awesome rack. Beautiful face. Yep”—he nods—“you’re definitely my type.”

Breaking Free: Una Familia Segura by Annie Hughes (Breaking Free, #1)

I have received an ARC copy of this book from the author in exchange of an honest review. I was not compensated in any way for it and thoughts are 100% mine.

Small Blurb:

24936491

Anna Rosa Castillo is unlike most 16 year old girls.

She doesn’t care for clothes or make up, nor does she giggle with her friends about hot guys. Coming from a small town in the North of England, where drugs and criminals are at the top of the food chain, Anna’s life is an impossible mixture of pain and sorrow. Drawing and tattoos are her only way of escaping the tortures that consume her at home. She lives by only one rule – do whatever he says, and she might live long enough to get away.

All that changes when a fatal night lands the monster of her nightmares in a prison cell and herself in a hospital bed, staring into the eyes of a father she has never known.
The addition of a father and family turns Anna’s life upside-down, thrusting her into a world she could never understand. Inner demons and unspeakable memories claw at her as she tries to build a relationship with her new family. But with her past looming over her new life, will she be able to break free?

My thoughts:

This is a first book by Annie and for a début book baby, I have to say it’s a beautiful story. Heartbreaking, sad, making you gasp every chapter at how horrific life can be.

The story is told from the POV of 16 years old Anna Castillo. The main protagonist of the story. Anna is not your usual teenager, where clothes, boys and parties are important. For her the main thing is to stay in the shadows and hopefully break free from her abusing stepfather.

We meet her at hospital, where she landed after her stepfather, Leo King, beat her up almost causing her death. Now she had broken ribs, is bruised. Her abuser landed in prison for her abusing her and murder. But that’s not what is turning her world upside down. It’s the man that comes to her rescue. Her father, who she never met. David Porter, is set in helping her and taking her away from this nightmare. After she agrees to go with him to America, to live with him and his family, she never expects that she will find, what she missed so much: father, mother, brother and friends. A family that will support her through her hell, as she is still expected to testify against Leo.

Even though she has her friend Jas, she is also betrayed by her. In addition her grandparents from hell, wants to fight the custody over her, but David is not letting them near her after hearing, what kind of monsters they were. All of them: Leo, her mother and her grandparents.

I love the story. It shows how important family is and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Anna, find her family as that light. But even after telling her family the whole truth of what was happening to her since Leo became her stepfather, she thought that they will trust her. But as her new family, they want to protect her, and sometimes they are overprotective and causes her to feel betrayed and not trusted. Even though they fought against all obstacles and becomes an amazing family.

I love Mel and how kind she is. She is a perfect mother figure. I fell in love with David, her dad, from the first meeting they had. He is snarky, knows what he wants and he wants to give Anna what she missed for the past 16 years.

I love Chloe, her best friend and I adore Jake and how they don’t judge her after what happened to her.

But I just WORSHIP her relationship with Logan, her stepbrother! You can see he loves her, he supports her and wants what is best for her. He is the perfect big brother, that every girl wants.

Beautiful story, that will make you cry, sob, snort and laugh. I felt so heartbroken, but also I love how beautifully it ends.

Well done Annie! Amazing, beautiful 5 stars! Can’t wait for the next part!

The Hazard of Sleeping with a Friend by Alyssa Rose Ivy (Hazards, #5)

I have received an ARC copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts are 100% mine and I wan not compensated in any way.

So before moving to my thoughts, I have to wipe the tears, blow my nose again. Ok, I’m ready…damn the tears are starting again.

Warning: Sleeping with a friend might change your life forever.

Sleeping with Kyle was never in the plans. Pretending to be his girlfriend was one thing, but letting our relationship become anything but platonic was another. The problem with mixing friendship with sex is that inevitably feelings get involved, and when that happens there’s no turning back.

When Kyle’s life fell apart around him, I needed to help, but doing that meant opening myself up to the most terrifying thing in the world—falling in love.

My thoughts:

This book is the most awaited book in the Hazards Series…at least by me. I always wanted to know Jade’s story. She was amazing friend in most of the previous parts, but she was always the one that was really closed. No one knew about her previous life. Life before coming to college. And I thought that maybe she had a bad break up, her parents are not the best ones. But her story…her story made me cry. I was sobbing. I never expected that she went through something like that.

In here we have Jade and Kyle. Friends, since they started working together at the music station and also after drama with Juliet and Kyle’s brother, Dylan. Or Cara’s story. They were amazing friends. Jade felt like she can tell Kyle everything, but she was also falling for him. She had a crush, but she didn’t want a relationship, as she knew it never works out and it ends ugly. She wanted to spare herself heartbreak and hurt, humiliation after a break up.

Their conversation just as the book begins made me laugh so hard my tummy hurt. Their teasing is amazing and so funny!

The story is told from 2 POVs: Jade’s and Kyle’s. Both of them have their secrets, that no one knows about. Both had drama in the past. Even though it’s Jade that is supposed to call Kyle if she gets an URGE, but it’s him calling her first, but it’s not because of that. He needs her help in convincing his family, that he has a girlfriend. For couple of months now. At the beginning she is not sure what to do. She knows it’s a bad idea, especially, when she is crushing on him so much. But even though, she agrees and after a week together, everything changes. Their are not able to go back to being just friends. They agree to let things happen naturally. Jade, being herself, is clearly stating it’s only sex, but Kyle is fighting to make sure it will change and they will have a full relationship. One night, where she admits that it’s something more and finally she is ready to call it a relationship, she tells him everything. Her bad break up and what happened to damage her. In here I was crying really hard. I DID NOT EXPECT THAT! At the same time a tragedy happens and this time it’s not Jade that is pushing Kyle away, it’s him pushing her away. He is depressed and blames himself. He shuts everyone out. He knows that he is hurting Jade, but he is convinced he doesn’t deserve anything. And slowly darkness pulls him deeper and deeper. But Jade fights and one evening, she follows him to one place he finds happiness, and as only one person she is telling him That it’s not his fault. Never was. He was not the selfish one.

Everything ends with usual happy ending, but this story broke me. In my personally view, this part was the most beautiful one.

Well done, Alyssa. Amazing, beautiful 5 stars.
